Alan Gray established Scarborough Hypnotherapy in 2006. He is one of North Yorkshire's most qualified and experienced practitioners in Clinical Hypnosis, Analytical Hypnotherapy, Inner-child Therapy, Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) & Stress Management. Alan has been registered by the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) since it first opened its Register to Hypnotherapy in 2010. He is a member of the CNHC Profession Specific Board for hypnotherapy. Alan is a Senior Advanced Practitioner on the General Hypnotherapy Register, Fully Accredited by the National Council for Hypnotherapy and Senior Accredited by the National Council of Psychotherapists. Will hypnosis control my mind?

 

The answer is certainly not, you won't be controlled in any way. In fact, for many people a hypnotic trance is a frequently accessed state of mind. It's when we daydream. Access our inner thoughts. As distinct from being externally focused, when we need to concentrate.

 

Fortunately we don't need to consciously think through every part our life. Having 'automatic' thoughts and actions (mind-matters) saves time and effort. These are our habits, many of which will be well established. Some good, some bad. Habits are engaged when the analytical part of the mind is resting. Being lazy, if you like. Then we are on 'automatic pilot'. Able to do things without the effort of thinking. Such as smoking, comfort eating, nail biting, being pessimistic...there's a long list.

 

With our range of well-rehearsed habits we could literally 'daydream' our way through life. Not that we should, of course! Because having conscious awareness in thoughts and actions is essential for sensible logical cognitive decisions. Making beneficial changes. Developing knowledge and skills.

 

When we are internally focused we are in a daydream. In other words, self-absorbed in a trance. The depth of that trance will vary. Sometimes out of the blue a thought may appear that reminds us of a need. A relaxed mind allow subconscious thoughts to become more consciously accessible. Out of the blue, we might be reminded of something we need to do.

 

Then we can access the 'back of our mind' including: memories and their associated feelings, perceptions, hopes, plans, fears, confidence, beliefs, habits, doubts, imagination, creativity and self-esteem.

 

These are elements of our personality, influenced by past experiences, developed beliefs and knowledge. Added to our genetic inheritance. There will certainly be an emotional dimension, particularly arising from the formative years. We absorb so much when we are young. Other aspects of our personality will be contributed by the conscious mind.

 

Stress arises when there is conflict between the conscious and subconscious. For example, a subconscious smoking habit might conflict with a conscious need (for health reasons) to become a committed non-smoker.

 

Which is why natural hypnosis is so powerful. There are no side-effects, other than being relaxed. It is highly effective at reprogramming the subconscious to facilitate change. Restoring harmony, removing habits, so you become less stressed & anxious.
